2011 Rollapaluza Urban Hill Climb

On an overcast (and showery) July evening after a super impressive stage of the Tour de France it was time to see some real cycling action in the flesh.  We headed over to Swain’s Lane in Highgate, North London to enjoy the 2011 Rollapaluza Urban Hill Climb.  This is the second running of this closed road hill climb trial and over 120 riders were signed up for around 90 seconds (well, for the fast ones that is) of torture.

Naturally we found a spot on a seriously steep section of the climb from where we took photos and shouted ‘Allez Allez Allez’ at everyone who rode past.  From full on speed tuned road racing bikes, fixed gear ‘courier style’ rides through to fold-up Bromptons and London hire ‘Boris Bikes’ there was plenty to keep you entertained.

Between about 6:30pm and 8:45pm riders headed up this super steep hill in an all-out against the clock time trial and other than the road being wet conditions were perfect, so much so that the 2010 course record was broken this time around.  The fastest riders of the night then took part in some ‘finals’ races to find the ultimate winner.

It was a great evening with some fantastic action to be seen.  A full set of photos taken by both Sharon (my wife) and I are now over at the gallery –
